Garden designer Troy Rhone transformed a hillside in a Mountain Brook backyard with terraced spaces planted with Southern garden favorites.

“Aging Gracefully” Garden Design — Birmingham Home & Garden, 2022

A client in Mountain Brook recently approached Troy Rhone to turn a steep hill behind a home into a garden space aimed at outdoor entertaining. Troy responded with a vision to take the existing backyard and carve into the hillside a series of terraced rooms.

He seeded the steps, planted figs to soften brick walls, and sourced a collection of tasteful lawn ornaments—including a fountain, teak benches, and a coral-and-iron table with a mirror. Troy combined the casualness of pea gravel, which keeps the design from being too formal, with an array of weathered orbs and planters to perfectly complement the home’s stucco exterior.

Thanks to the garden rooms, tastefully chosen accessories, pavers, and abundant flowers guaranteed to thrive in the Birmingham climate, this garden feels like a well-established landscape that was grown slowly over time. Download the full article to see photos and read more.
